Photo Hosting Service

It has been suggested that we add a photo hosting service to Autopia so Autopians can publish their favorite car pics on the web. What is your interest in such a service?

I like the idea. If you could offer photo hosting that was message board friendly and gave me a couple meg of photos then I think it would be great. I use MSN for most of my pictures but they aren't very user friendly sometimes. Half the time my pictures don't even show up. I have to load them in a certian way... Pain in the ***. I really like the photo album I use in my sig but I can't post those pics and it has their little tag on each picture. I hate that. If you could find a photo host that would give me 3 things then I think it would be good.

Room for more than a few pictures.
The ability to create an album I could share with others.
High bandwith for views on the album.
Item 2 and 3 are optional. I wouldn't really care if there wasn't an album option but it would be nice. As long as the photos aren't going to be lost someday, like my friends that had Photopoint, then I'll be a happy camper.

The photo hosting will be different in that you can have like your own webpage where you store pics for all the world to see.

Wow, this maybe a tough decision David. The voting looks pretty even.

After posting this poll, the Moderators and I had a long discussion about a photo hosting service. We have finally decided on a full web page/photo hosting service. Here's what we will offer soon:

1. A FREE web page/email service with no banner ads (I hate ads)

2. A basic web page/email service with WYSIWYG editor ($5-7/mo)

3. A full web page/email service w/ FP support ($12-15/mo)

We have not worked out the details on the amount of space we can offer for free, or the exact price on the paid services, but it will all be competitive.

David-

I admire the effort - but I can only pine in my $0.02 as an IT professional that's had his hands in a lot of big sites...

Hosting images is a NIGHTMARE. It's both server hardware and bandwidth intensive. Hosting consumer images is even worse - in a lot of cases, people mistakenly leave their only copies online, and if something should happen to them, they go ape__it.

I can only see it working out for Autopia if it's a paid service. Web banner ads are producing less and less revenue these days. Free? I wouldn't want to see Autopia put under that kind of strain.

My $0.02 - but if you're going to do this, I'd highly advise you go the paid route. It's a service, and the nominal fees will only go to offset your increased operating expenses.
