What should the penalty for keying a car?
What do you think the penalty for keying a car should be in the United States?
I am at least hoping that Autopia members believe that this a worse offense than the general public because most of us love cars so much. The poor car didn't do anything take it out on something else.

It would kill me to have a nice car keyed, but I would deal with it. No point in reacting worse than the perp himself. That said, let them sit in jail for a while and think about it. A month sounds good.

I'm all for stiffer penalties... for this, and all other forms of vandalism.

Remember Vincent Vega in Pulp Fiction?
"I just wish I caught 'em doin' it, ya know? Oh man, I'd give anything to catch 'em doin' it. It'a been worth his doin' it, if I coulda just caught 'em, you know what I mean?"

If the person is caught, it should be handled as an act of crime such as theft or vandalism, but with stiffer penalties that include arrest, fines and civil action.
Taking the law into your own hands (although satisfying) could bring disaster, and the law will usually side with the perpetrator if you act in retaliation against the moron (such as breaking the person's various body parts, etc.).

In Texas, there is legislation pending that would make any car burglary a felony. Maybe they should toss vandalism in too.

I can't believe some people voted for "Don't be silly it's a minor infraction". Man if I caught a person keying my car I would take the law into my own hands without hesitation. The piece of crap would never key another car again because he wouldn't physically be able to when I was done with him.

^^The key is to not let the perp be able to finger you in case he wants to take legal or civil action.

Perhaps if someone keys your car, the courts should give you the option of keying your intials into their chest.
