I think the recoil is brand dependent. My duty weapon is a Glock 21 and it makes a loud boom and shoots fire out the barrel but EVERYONE prefers the smoothness of the 45 compared to the muzzle flip of the 40.
Statistics about gun battles all alarmingly show that most occur within something like 3-7 feet (point and shoot distances)
