Thanks rydawg, David Feramoni has been giving me advise on the Rotary (If it ever comes in) and pad stuff so I know I want to "learn the wool" way because of the speed and great control it offers over foam pads.
A friend of mine (the young car painter) lets me use his Makita (wool pad) on a scrap fender with his direction (actually he is not to good). I found it to be a hell of a lot smoother than the foam pad I used on a farm tractor, you just have to remember the basics like don't stop! Though, I did stop to see what exactly happened, LOL.
I used the 3M compound that Accumulator told me about and it worked really great !
I just need more information on backing plate relative to pad size. I believe (think) it makes a difference when you are using foam vs wool.
For instance, I have a 5 inch Backing P, that will work great with foam up to 6.5 inches.
However the wool pads are so "floppy" I am sort of at a loss as to what is right or wrong due to basically, realistically, no experience with wool !
Also, the Edge single sided wool pads are definitely different than the Auto G wool pads in construction and layout. The AG ones are sheepskin with a Velcro backing, Edge single edge pads have a semi rigid backing that also incorporates the Velcro (high Quality pads though).
Long story short, Backing plates will have to be different (In my mind) if you are using Edge vs AG type wool pads, but what!
Sorry to ramble, Change.
