We just recently tried this technique as well and have found what most everyone else is saying. In fact, we decided that we probably will quit buying the larger pads altogether and use only the smaller pads for both the rotory and our PC's.

The only thing I can think of is that you may want to reduce your RPM a bit until you get comfortable with the smaller pad. Then you can probably kick it right back up to where you were with the larger ones. (The edge of the smaller pad will spin faster thus potentially creating more heat)

Other than that, you should be fine.
