6.5" is just right for a 6" backing plate. The backing plate is only there to hold the pad; you don't need support all the way to the edge of the pad. You wouldn't want the backing plate all the way to the edge of the pad anyway, because you would risk damaging the paint if the edge of the backing plate touched it. On concave surfaces, you want the edge of the pad to
flex a little.
