I gave Charlie's an honest try (and still have a few gallons that I'll be using up on, uhm, something) but with my washing machines (both HE and conventional) and my water (conditioned/softened and double-filtered municipal water) it just doesn't get stuff clean for me

I'd buy a reasonable quantity and make sure it works well for you before getting many gallons of it. Funny, I didn't have any complaints with the first gallon, but after using it for a more extended period of time it proved to be a loser (for *me*, not saying it doesn't/won't work for anybody else).
Hopefully, I'll have more luck on with their APC. I tried a sample of the laundry detergent, thanks to Patrick, on some dirty/greasy Mf's and it didn't get them quite clean. I ran them again using Tide and they came out a lot cleaner. Maybe if I used double the amount for dirty laundry it would work better? I'm sure it works well on clothes with light dirt though.
