'78 was well past the true muscle car days. The shift to auto trans. is a reflection of the transition of the Corvette from its sports-car roots to the luxo-GT it had become by that time. Same transition of the 240/260/280Z. These cars
have come back closer to their roots in more recent times as the technology caught up to the emissions and safety requirements and allowed more horsepower and better ride/handling compromises.
