Bingo! Me too, I noticed that as well on a couple of towels which leads me to believe the edging may marr the finish. But the towel portion itself passed the "cd test."
Like you, I won't be using them for hardcore paint work, but interiors, windows, catching drips here and there as well as drying bumpers, wheels, lower rockerpanels, etc...
Costco also sells 10 pack WW's in the towel section made by Eurow O'Reilly that are much stiffer but good for what I just mentioned.
Your post made me think of wash mitts. A good way to check your cotton chenille wash mitts to see if they are 100% cotton is to pluck a fiber and burn it. If it turns black and hard plastic-like, then I wouldn't use on paint. If it burns up into a gray ash and blows away, then it is 100% cotton and safe for paint.
