I apply Rain-X about three times a year, and it works great. I use the old kind that gets buffed onto the glass, and have never had a problem with it breaking down, in either the Midwest (sun...) or New England (a few minutes of sun, and all other weather).
Wouldn't a lot of waxes or sealants have some sort of oils that would then be on your glass?
