I would get the RSX Type S, no question about it.
I've owned a base 5spd for 4 years now, and really like the car. It's fun to drive, has a pretty big trunk, and all the amenities you'd want. The tranny is a dream to work, especially compared to my friend's WRX which feels like a leg press. Although the Type S requires premium and insurance might be a little higher, I'd still try getting one. Having the extra 40hp and real VTEC is definintely nice. I've really had no problems with my tranny, but it's not a Type S. I'd like to think most people make the tranny problems bigger then they're really are.
I'll admit the base isn't super fast, but I was able to spank my cousin's 08 Mercedes-Benz C300 sport (6 speed), twice.
