I've always been told to use fragrance- and softener-free detergent and to not get overzealous with the vinegar (IIRC, it can have a degrading effect on the fibers).
Like the previous poster mentioned: about every 3 washes or so.

There used to be a member here (and may still be) with the username DFTowel, I believe. Do a search on him concerning this subject and you'll get the info you need.
