We've cleaned sooooo many nasty interiors over the years that I can count on 2 hands the times where I wish I had an extractor (we started off having 4 machines and didn't feel the need to replace them as they failed). If you know what you're doing, hand cleaning fabric is on par with extraction as far as time & quality. The key to insuring the best final result in both methods is pre-cleaning, not so much the actual final cleaning. Many times after pre-cleaning a carpet, it only marginally improves the appearance after final scrubbing to completition.
