My two cents so take it for what it is worth. The only manufacturer that seems to make a decent CVT is Nissan. While the CVT in theory works, in practice it is much harder to make it seem smooth like a conventional transmission.( even harder on higher horsepower setups) It is a hard adjustment for many to accept that the slipping is normal and not indicitive of an oncoming tranny failure. I would second "Baker's" post. Audi/VW makes a superb Direct Shift gearbox/paddle shifter tranny which is a compelling alternative to a manual transmission.
