I had an '82 GM car that had some stone protection stuff on the lower panels from the factory...my recollection was that it seemed to be sprayed on, but it could have been film...on the other hand, I bought the car used, and I suppose it's possible the guy before me had it put on.

He's referring to the paint being cured at elevated temperature, which usually results in a harder finish, as well as reducing the curing time (you want to make sure any solvents have evolved out of the paint and it's fully cured before you cover it with film).
