Are we thinking of the same country? Canada, right? Take out your map and look north of the USA (I'm sure you know where that one is). North is up. Well, that is unless you're holding the map upside down. You'll know because the letters will look wrong. Canada is the really big country that isn't Russia or Australia. That Canada (the one that actually exists, not the one you've created in your mind) is pretty different from the one you're describing.
Oh, and if the U.S is what's keeping us from being attacked, who the heck is protecting Australia. Again, for the geographically challenged that's the big island in the bottom right of the map, not Greenland or Antarctica.
