Go to your local junk yard and look for yourself How many Cavilier's do you see, Beretta's, Corsica's, The focus, Transam's, Impalla's, S10's, Buick's, Oldsmobiles, Regal's, Fords, Just about the whole domestic line can be found their. For 2 reasons. They dont last, and because they need parts for the ones still running that continue to break down. As you walked tough that junkyard how many Hondas did you see ? how about VWs. The choice is simple, do you want a car that you'll need to put tons of cash in when it ages ? if so just spend it now and buy the 3 series.
I have to disagree.

I am not "loyal" to any particular brand, I buy the car I want at the time I am looking, end of story.

Anyway, I can say without bias that my "American" cars have been more reliable, and had less costs with regards to ownership then the imports I have owned. Hell, my WRX with less then 7500 miles has had more issues already then my Focus with 110k.

Regarding your "evidence" of junk yards, thats a nearly bogus metric as its relative to local sales levels. Furthermore, imports cost more to repair and as a result many of them are diverted from junk yards and are immediately parted out as their parts are worth more.
