Even if it was a one night stand, there is always a risk that the person you strayed with could hold it over your head or somehow get pissed at you and tell your wife for revenge so you probably should confess anyways.

Assuming I get married some day, I couldn't imagine ever cheating on her. If I did, even if it was a one night stand with a woman from a far away town who in no way could figure out how to find me or my wife, I don't think I could live knowing I was hiding it from her. She would probably be able to tell I was always uncomfortable around her and eventually put two and two together. That and during sex with her, they other woman would always be in the back of my mind. Your best bet, keep it in your pocket when you are not with the wife.
