Honda didn't invent 4WS. Mercedes first started using it for war purposes back in the 40's. And the first 4WS application in a production vehicle was the Nissan Skyline GT-R in '85. That's right, 4WD + 4WS

By 1987 when Honda first introduced 4WS, Nissan had it as an option in most of their vehicles. GM wasn't late to the game either, really. They had 4WS on a few concepts in the 80's, as did everyone else. But as usual with GM, it didnt hit the market until 2000? 2001?
