The $300 wouldn't be shipping, it's because UPS would have to "broker" the package through customs, and they do that based on value. It's usually ~6%, which of $2000 is $300. That's ON top of duty/tax, so you would be looking at ~$600 in tax/brokerage/etc to bring it in. Ironically the shipping charge would be less than $25. Heh.
What I did was ship to a friend in NY state, he will ship to me via USPS (which I have learned can be tracked as you mentioned earlier). Done and done. USPS does not charge brokerage, an 9/10 times the packages get through with duty charges only, rarely they make you pay a broker to bring it in, but you can do that for under $50. UPS just gouges you on it. In fact there is a class action lawsuit against them about it.
